Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the single TLD intended for personal websites only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to book john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered 3rd-level domains remained online.
